Award winning apartment block in the heart of the Northern Quarter
As part of the wider mixed-use development of the 60 Oldham Street Site, LIND Studio obtained planning permission to construct a 7 storey apartment block on the empty building plot the rear of the site, located in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Following an in-depth analysis of the site and the historic context of Stevenson Square Conservation Area, LIND Studio developed a concept for a new building aimed at reinstating the historic building line. The design draws inspiration from the historic building which previously occupied the site in terms of massing, rhythm of fenestration and materiality, whilst clearly finding a contemporary expression, adding a new chapter to the history of the site.
Moving away from the typical “white box” development and be more reflective of the eclectic character of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, structural elements such as woodcrete blocks and concrete floors were left exposed resulting in a tactile experience and raw aesthetic. Bespoke joinery items were added to provide spatial definition and storage.
