Rural Homestead in Historic Village

Proposal for 5no New Local Occupancy Homes in the Heart of the Lake District

Located in the historic village of Troutbeck, Lake District, this scheme sees the proposal for 5 new local occupancy family dwellings to be constructed on a secluded and picturesque site.

The proposal developed from an in-depth analysis of the historic vernacular architecture of the area in which existing features were examined to inform massing, configuration and materiality of the new dwellings. Given the historical significance of the area it was important that the homestead was fundamentally contextual, blending seamlessly into the historic fabric of the village.

To achieve this, the cottage and barn typologies typical of the area were re-imagined in configurations reminiscent of past assemblies, with a combination of lakeland stone and lime-wash walls breaking up the visual massing of the dwellings.

Vernacular features such as expressed chimney stacks and through-stone wall detailing adds further interest to the facades in keeping with the historic setting.
